was watching the first half hour of anastasia (the disney movie) on tv just now. i thought it was very funny, because everything was just so absurdly wrong. :D

rasputin is this funny huge skinny guy with a very long beard (ok except the skinny part nothing very wrong there) who (get this) has evil magical powers! (and a pet albino bat who talks.) on top of that the movie seems to show that he's still alive in 1917, which is hahahahaha never mind.

tsar nicholas ii actually showed some backbone. ("how dare you come into the palace!?") hahaha.

russia was a "happy country". (if that's not funny i don't know what is.)

the people seem to hate the communists more than the tsar. and then there was the ubiquity of bad guy commies, including the ticket-seller at the train station, who was wearing a military uniform complete with a red star on his cap. :D

of course, since this is an american movie, anything is better than communism. including absolute, autocratic monarchy. perhaps because under communism, stationmasters will dress in military uniforms and snarl at you when you want to buy a train ticket.

people dance and sing in the streets like it's some broadway musical.

anastasia dances in the street like it's some broadway musical.

the skyline of st petersburg looks like moscow's.

----
there was more, but it's scarcely worth mentioning :p
----

that said i think it's a nice cartoon. (i like disney cartoons really, even though they're all wrong.) nice drawings and stuff. and somewhat nice music. and effects. etc. like this nice scene when phantom dancers come floating down from the windows of a dusty, barricaded palace.

should children be shown cartoons that are too blatantly untrue? (would it cause permanent harm?) maybe children are too young to know that all the anastasias so far were frauds, that russia was not a happy country, that the glittering court of the romanovs and the high society of st petersburg was built based on the poverty of the vast majority of russians, that rasputin did not have evil magical powers (gasp!) etc etc etc.

or maybe it's nice to once in a while indulge in childish fantasies.
