blocks ended today! (i've been wanting to say this all week... NOW i finally get the chance to! :D) and today was quite ok. history was not quite so disastrous as i thought it would be. after a single essay test we all ran off quickly to orchard to catch spiderman 2 (well, after staging a very small and very mild sit-in protest in the tutors' room regarding lessons on tuesday. and so there are no lessons on tuesday. whee!) and spiderman 2 was very nice! well, at least, the 2/3 i managed to catch and the 1/3 remaining that i peeped at between the cracks of my fingers was very nice, at any rate. (the last movie i watched was peter pan. how long ago was that? can't remember) anyway it's also pretty sad and touching. if only i wasn't busy being freaked out by the octopus things.

anyway. just a random thought: if i ever have a girlfriend i should never bring her to a horror movie, because i'd probably be more freaked out than she would be. was so utterly freaked out by spiderman today. i mean... those long and metallic snakey thingeys attached to his back were bloody freaky. i didn't dare to watch all those parts when he was about to appear. (usually heralded by the ground shaking and stuff, which reminded one of jurassic park and the t-rex. i remember when i was young i was thinking why the ground shook when a t-rex approached while it didn't while a brachiosaurus was walking around. brachiosaura are supposed to be much much much heavier than t-rexes.)

well to put it succintly i'll quote judith. (she has an eminent supply of great quotes. especially when her brain forgets to make the occasional cameo appearance. eh judith? :p) "tongkai," she said in the most withering tones, "you are a wimp." and then, "you are worse than my younger brother, and he's ten years old."

i shall neglect to mention the comments i made about her education at her alma mater over lunch.

headed off to borders and realized that i'd never have enough money. i need money to buy cds. more cds are good. need more cds. agh. agh.

jurong east library is good! a lot of books. a lot of books. and much nicer than the old one, which i used to visit when i was still a child. never liked it much... the furnishings were spartan and it was fairly noisy. don't know why too. borrowed 2 books! and kai demanded payment for goodness-knows-what so i was obliged to give him 2 slots on my library card. *sniff*

i remember that when i was young my brain was usually confused by subtlety. years ago my mind was a blunt instrument; it could not comprehend much beyond simple definitions and statements of fact. something IS something. something MEANS something, exactly. i sort of wonder how that kind of world feels like now. after years of reading and thinking... there seems to be no more place for simple statements of fact or definition. everything i think or say is now overlayed with assumptions and qualifiers, and many other semantic playthings designed to impart more 'truth' into words. there is nothing simple now.

i often wonder when was that instant when nuance crept into my thinking processes. it must have been a singular, eye opening, even liberating event. if one thing could be and mean several things in different contexts instead of one thing in every situation, it meant an instant, exponetial increase in the depth of the world i lived in. and yet i have no memory of it. maybe then i just accepted it as something new that i learnt, no different, from, say, discovering that the boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius, and only thinking back now has made it achieve a unique significance it did not possess back then. (something like the storming of the bastille, really.) no, i wouldn't go so far as rosencrantz as to say that i possessed an intuitive knowledge of nuance since the day i was born.

and yes. celebrate the short post blocks euphoria before we start on prelims mugging.
