kai said he blogged 4 days ago so that he could read my post over the weekend.

in a fit of an absence of mind, or just a fit of subconscious bloody-mindedness, i'm posting on a monday.

(sorry!)

this time, i can't use the time difference to cover my ass.

however, i can always point the finger at my tutor, who is an evil man, and who wants essays handed in by 5pm on sundays.

in other news, i'm kinda worried that people are not really getting what we're trying to get at on this blog.

the following description of this blog appeared on shawn's:

"title constantly in flux. Ex-classmates (high school). Both with the Foreign Affairs ministry and no doubt will carry out the mission of their ministry beyond the seven seas and spread the Singapore love (perhaps the seedy area of Geylang with the China mistresses). Presently separated by the Earth (the sun never sets on a Kai). Blog about everything and anything. "

i cannot say how inaccurate the description is beyond the first 2 and a half sentences. despite the connotation of the word 'ministry' with 'service' - (latin, minis, variant of minus, of a lesser amount + -ter, suffix, as opposed to magister, master) we are emphatically not into those kind of services. i swear to you that if you do some day get past the checkpoint and the gurkhas surrounding the MFA HQ at the old tanglin officers' club you will not see a bunch of mama-sans ministering to the needs of the lonely expatriate community of singapore.

(on a side-note, are male mama-sans papa-sans?)

additionally, we do not have any intention of spreading any kind of love. at least i don't. not that singapore is terribly loving anyway. foreign ministries are not known for spreading the love. one just needs to look at the multi-vehicle pile-up that was the first world war to see that.

on another note, there is a certain irony to the etymology of 'minister' in singapore.

in some countries and at certain periods, however, serfs are legally bound to the land on which they work, and cannot be sold apart from it.

geographically speaking, england and singapore are not at the antipodes of the earth. so technically, we aren't really separated by the earth, only by a substantial part (maybe 2/3's?) of it. ok i know i'm quibbling, but this is absolutely absolutely crucial for the next point.

the sun does set on kai. there is a certain time period every day when the sun sets. in summer it is between 9pm and 11pm GMT. in the middle of this dreadful winter when the sun sets depressingly early, it's between 5pm and 11pm GMT. there are no less than 3 hours of a set sun in kai. and anyway, we don't blog in relays, nor do we intend to.

shawn was no doubt thinking about the british empire. so, for the sun not to set on kai, hypothetically, we need a third writer for this blog who is based in canada. actually, panama would do fine, if not better, since the sun won't set there so early in winter.

perhaps we ought to recruit a canadian kai.

and finally, we do not blog about anything and everything. we don't even come remotely close, and anyway, we're more discriminating than that.

this leads us on finally to the question: so what exactly are we getting at? what's behind the frequent title changes, the idiosyncratic (or maybe 'idiotic' would be a better adjective) script, the silly bylines, and the utter lack of a consistent running thread through our blog posts?

...

that's a good question. i'll come back to you later on that.
